Local Heroes | Cricket Team
Studying a black and white photograph featuring elegant, white-clad men wearing shin guards
and helmets and holding bats on the verdant green grass, one would say they were part of a group of
English noblemen, somewhere in Sussex in the early 1900s.
And yet, it is a rare photo depicting the cricket players from Corfu. Founded 125 years ago, in 1893,
at the Corfiot Gymanastics Club, since then, various cricket teams have enjoyed great success and
distinctions in a variety of games and competitions, as well as participating in the Hellenic Cricket
Federation.
Coach Iosif Misfout’s knowledge and passion for the sport, as well as the
dedication of many team executives, aim to spread awareness of the sport
and its history in primary school children. And this is why cricket has been
named as one of the Corfiots’ favourite sports – from the first match in
1823, in Espianada, when the British fleet stopped to replenish stocks
– and continues its course, directly linked with the land that welcomed it
with open arms.
