Recycling Opera
Leandros Spartiotis, artist from
Preveza, proves that art can be
created even with trash. Yes,
you heard right.
It looks like a palace built on sand,
but wait there’s a “tiny” difference:
this palace was constructed exclusively
out of soft drink and beer cans. When
87-year-old Leandros Spartiotis
began collecting the cans, he had not
yet decided how to use them. 30,000
recyclable cans later, the spectacular
“Water and Dream Opera” is one
of the most original and ingenious
artworks in Preveza. Made entirely out
of recyclable materials, the impressive
theatre stage measures 30 meters in
length and 8m in height and covers
an area of approximately 200 square
meters. It took more than four years
to collect the cans in various parts
of Greece, such as Skyros island,
Korinth, Sivota and Preveza. Although
the original goal of the artist was to
make the Opera float on water, due to
technical difficulties, it was eventually
built on the beach at Pefkakia.
Fully functional and visitable,
the Opera has welcomed artists of
the Greek National Opera and many
events have taken place there over the
last two summers.
